Contemporary History

Migrations, Minorities and Memories is the mission statement of the department. It represents the subject in all its breadth in research, teaching and public relations. The focus is on Europe as a whole, in particular Southeast Europe and the region's reciprocal relations with the German-speaking world.

Nationally and internationally networked and with a comparative approach, the focus is on the diverse migration events of modern times and contemporary history. Here again, the focus is on forced migrations and their consequences. The changing relationship between nation states and minorities is also of interest. The department examines characteristics of the culture of remembrance of migration and minorities whether in individual, communicative or cultural memory. In addition, the historical-political debates and the examination of the history of German historiography are analyzed.

Committed to different approaches and methods, the interdisciplinary research aims at fundamental work, individual studies and exhibition projects. Closely linked to this is teaching at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and at universities abroad.
