The seminar provided an introduction to various approaches to the study of ethnicity and nationalism. It discussed theories about the emergence and persistence of national identities and the relationship between ethnicity and nationalism. It elaborated on how ethnic categories and national identities were (re)produced and examined contemporary manifestations of ethnicity and nationalism against the background of globalization and its presumed post-national features. The sessions mainly focused on Europe, but cases from outside Europe were also considered, for example, when discussing migration, diasporic identities, or the distinction between civic and ethnic nationalism.
