The project focuses on transformation processes in selected Southeastern European cities since the 1980s. Cities are understood as administrative, economic, and cultural centers, as well as spaces for diverse societal developments. The primary aim of the project is to provide new perspectives on urban studies in Southeastern Europe through several case studies and in collaboration with researchers from the region.
The project seeks to highlight the mechanisms of transformation “from below”. Key components of the project include a 2022 conference titled “The City in Transition,” academic courses with excursions and virtual exhibitions, and an 2025 edited volume “The City in Transition”.
