Patrick Schmitt studied history and media studies at the University of Tübingen. He earned his Master’s degree (M.A.) in history with a thesis focusing on German-Romanian diplomacy in the context of family reunification for ethnic Germans in Romania in the late 1960s.
Between 2022 and 2025, he worked as a student assistant at the IdGL, supporting the institute in areas such as the archives, teaching, and managing a project website.
Since January 2026, he has been a research assistant and PhD candidate at the IdGL.
Research focuses:
- German-Romanian relations during the Cold War
- German minorities in Romania
- Southeast Europe during World War II
- History of migration
