Mathias Beer studied History and German language and literature at the universities of Sibiu (Romania), Tübingen and Stuttgart. With a scholarship of the German National Academic Foundation, he received his PhD at the University of Stuttgart in 1989 with the study “Eltern und Kinder des späten Mittelalters in ihren Briefen”. He completed his habilitation in 2018 at the Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania) with the thesis “Migration, Minority, Memory. Approaches to the History of German Minorities in and from South Eastern Europe”. Since 1990, he has headed the Contemporary History Research Unit at the IdGL, of which he was Managing Director from 2007-2023. He is a lecturer at the History Department of the Faculty of Philosophy at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen and holds a visiting professorship at the Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu (Romania). He is member of a number of academic committees and is co-editor of several book series and journals. 

In 2017, he got the Ludwig Uhland Award for his research in the field of migration studies.
